🌼 Good Bugs, Bad Bugs - and Who's Really Running Your Garden
Smoky Mountain Nature Lady Newsletter May 2026 - Vol 2, Issue 5

Hey friends,
You know that moment . . . you're out in the garden, spot a bug, and immediately think:
👉 "Friend… or foe?"
Here's the surprising truth:
🌿 Less than 1% of insects are actually harmful to your plants.
Which means most of what you're seeing? They're working for you.
Let's sort them out.
📝WORD UP
Myrmecochory (noun; mer-muh-KAH-kor-ee): The wild relationship where ants carry seeds (like trillium!) back to their nests, eat the fatty coating, and plant the seed in perfect soil.
Translation?
🐜 Ants = accidental gardeners
🌼The Good Guys (Don’t Touch These!)
🐞 Ladybugs

Aphid-eating machines. Both adults AND their weird-looking larvae devour pests daily.
🕊️ Lacewings

Their babies are called "aphid lions," and they deserve the title.
🪰 Hoverflies

Pollinators AND pest control. Overachievers. NOT bees!
🪲 Ground Beetles

Night-shift hunters eat slugs and soil pests.
🐝 Bees

No bees = no veggies. Simple as that. This includes the carpenter bees that lay their eggs in untreated wood!
✨ Tiny Lights, Big Magic
Fireflies aren’t just pretty—they’re communicating, synchronizing, and putting on one of nature’s most incredible shows.
Take a minute to watch my short video. It’ll make you see those little flashes in a whole new way. 🌿
🧨 The Troublemakers (Keep an Eye on These)
🐜 Aphids – Tiny sap-suckers that multiply FAST
🐛 Caterpillars – Can strip a plant overnight

🪲 Japanese Beetles – Leave "lacy" leaves behind

🕷️ Spider Mites – Tiny, destructive, love dry heat

🪽 Whiteflies – The "poof!" cloud when you touch a plant

😊BONUS!
👇 I made a quick printable to help you identify which “bad” bugs are hanging around your plants and what to do to get rid of them (without harsh chemicals). Grab it here. 👇

👀 Final Thought . . .
The next time you see a bug, pause. Look a little closer.
There's a good chance that tiny creature is:
✨ protecting your plants
✨ pollinating your flowers
✨ or quietly providing free pest control
And, do you know what?
That's much better than chemicals in a spray bottle.
💬QUOTE-A-PALOOZA
The truth is that we need invertebrates, but they don’t need us.
